because yes, it’s a thing.
when i first thought about what i wanted to write this evening, i was gearing up to talk about the rebirth and regeneration that an intense new moon in capricorn can bring. the reason why this moon is so transformative is because it makes a tight conjunction to pluto – a small but powerful planet that asks us to mine the deepest, darkest parts of our souls, societies, and structures and brings all the worms and creepy crawlies to the surface.
pluto stirring shit up can often be healing. as a member of the pluto in scorpio generation, i have a keen understanding that healing can never happen unless we’re really willing to GO THERE, you know? you can’t solve a problem unless you TALK about the problem and then you DO something about it.
but there’s another piece to this new moon in capricorn story – a piece that asks us not just to look at our own flaws, failures, and flesh wounds. there’s a piece to this story that is focused on the existing structures that hold us, and the questions that come up when we wonder, “are these things helpful, or are they harmful? are the processes and institutions and walls that were built to protect me *actually* keeping me safe?”
capricorn energy is earth energy. capricorn energy is ordered and deliberate. capricorn energy tells us that we can build out this little corner of the world for ourselves and with time, care, and patience, maybe we can grow it into something more. maybe we can foster something that is long-lasting and outlives us and our children and our children’s children.
on july 4, 1776, when the nation known as the united states of america was born, pluto was in capricorn (27°). it takes pluto ~248 years to make a full revolution. and at this moment, we are living through a pluto return – the era in which pluto transiting in the sky comes back to where it was when the united states was formed.
it’s no coincidence that we are seeing an unprecedented era of political violence as this nation is in the midst of its pluto return. and to be fair, political violence has always existed in this country in one way or another. but given the current climate – a pandemic, an unprecedented economic freefall, and an attempted coup playing out on live television before our very eyes – the things that many folks were able to ignore in the past because of their privilege, their whiteness, their wealth, or their ignorance is now being churned up and brought to the surface…just like those creepy crawlies we’d usually rather ignore.
pluto doesn’t always mean violence. but pluto’s presence when there *is* violence is not a surprise…not by a long shot.
in just a few hours, the moon and the sun will meet at 23° capricorn and pluto will be sitting at 24° capricorn. and normally, on a new moon, i’d give you advice for each sign and suggest how you might use this moment to manifest based on the area of your chart that is being activated.
instead, i am following the guidance of astrologer mecca woods (instagram: @1meccanism, twitter: @themeccanism) and i am heeding her call to “perform rituals and send up prayers for protection”.
you can go to mecca’s instagram or twitter for more specifics on her rituals and practices, and i will only add that i encourage you to pray or wish for peace and protection in a way that feels right and natural to you. in this intense moment, in this unprecedented time, you need to do only what you are able. take it slow, and be kind and gentle with yourself.
wishing you all the best on the night of this powerful new moon. ❤
